Maria Allegrini was born and educated in Italy. She received a "Laurea" in Physics (1969) from Pisa University and a PhD in Physics (1973) from Reading University (UK).
Current position: Chair of Structure of the Matter, Engineering Faculty, University of Pisa.
Previous positions: Researcher (1972-1988) of the National Research Council (CNR-Italy): Associate Professor of Physics (1988-1994), University of Pisa, Full Professor of Quantum Optics (1994-2000), University of Messina.
She has been research scholar or visiting professor in USA (Brookhaven National Laboratory, University of Missouri-St. Louis, Lehigh University, JILA-Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics Boulder, NIST-National Institute of Standards and Technology Gaithersburg), Canada (Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics Ottawa), France (Ecole Normale Superieure Paris, Laboratoire Aimè Cotton Orsay), Germany (Max Planck Institut für Quantenoptik Gärching, Ulm University, Ludwig-Maximilian University München), Denmark (Niels Bohr Institute Copenhagen), Poland (Warsaw University).
The first part of her research activity has been in atomic, molecular and laser physics. In recent years, she has moved her research interests to material science, in particular nanoscience and nano-optics. Results of her activity are found in more than 300 articles, about 300 contributions to conferences and 3 teaching books. The interplay between her different areas of specialization is of great benefit for her research as well as for mentoring of young students and researchers.
Her expertise includes services in various panels and committees: International Relations Committee, Istituto Nazionale per la Fisica della Materia, Italy (coordinator 2001-04), Scientific Council of the "Département des Sciences Physiques et Mathématiques", CNRS, France (member 2001-05), Executive Committee, European Physical Society (member 2001-06 treasurer 2004-06), Executive Committee, Division of Atomic, Molecular, Optical Physics of the American Physical Society (member 2006-09), Executive Committee, Division of Laser Science of the American Physical Society (elected in 2009), Committee on International Scientific Affairs (CISA) of the American Physical Society (nominated for 2010-12), Board of Directories of the Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Scienze Fisiche della Materia, Italy (member 2006-10), Scientific Council of the AERES, Agence d’évaluation de la recherche et de l’enseignement supérieur, France (nominated in May 2011 by the French Ministry of High Education and Research), expert evaluator for the International Science Foundation (Soros Foundation), the European Commission, the “Institute Universitaire de France” (member of the “junior” committee 2007-08, president of the “senior” committee 2009 and president of the hard-sciences committee 2010), funding agencies and national organizations (Europe and USA); member or president of several recruitment committees for Universities or research Organizations.
She was the recipient of the Young Scientist Award (1973) of the Italian Physical Society, is Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Honorary Professor of Physics of the University of St. Petersburg (Russia) and Fellow of the European Academy of Sciences.
