WOODWORK

I like do-it-yourself. Particularly I am fond of woodwork... below you see several examples of my favourite hobby:

1) where to leave the keys, the money, the book to be returned to the library...

It is fixed to the wall with four screws, two of them are indicated.

2) where to lay sheets of paper...

They are made of round sticks (see picture below) inserted into the two main bars. Holes slightly wider than the sticks have been drilled and they have then been fixed by using a vinyl acetate glue (see "B" in picture below). Only the two extreme sticks have been screwed (see arrows in the picture besides).

The bar that is in contact with the wall has been planed until getting a triangular section (see "A").

3) a bookcase for my home office...

CMB

It is made of boards of solid deal wood. Different compartments of the case have been built with sizes and shapes adapted to the books, notes, etc. for which they were intended to. The lamps on top of the bookcase are usual spotlights (those generally used to illuminate portraits). The switch is shown with the arrow and the electric cords are hidden behind the shelves.

I usually make use of deal (or fir) wood since it is cheap, light and easy to cut and manipulate.

A detail of the case.

Another part of the bookcase. The back is made with plywood and nailed to the rear of the stanchions. It also provides stability to the whole construction. The arrows "A" and "B" point out the squared sticks that support the shelves. The rear sticks "A" turn out to avoid the bending of the shelf even though they need not being held together to the shelf itself.

4) for the vacuum cleaner attachments...

5) some shelves for the washing products besides the washing-machine in the bathroom...

One day my wife asked me to make a shelf for the cleaning products used by the washing-machine. She expressly said that it had to be thin enough to stay hidden behind the bathroom door and be unseeable from outside (!)...

It is made with two stanchions. One of them, indicated in the picture with an horizontal arrow, is hidden by the door jamb (it was trimmed with a plane in order to get the right shape). The vertical arrow instead shows the (only) screw needed to keep the whole thing vertical and fixed against the wall.
