Smashing Discoveries-the Large Hadron Collider at CERN

The Pontecorvo Colloquia are appealing talks in all the fields of Physics, primarily addressed to students, showing research carried out at the Department of Physics of the Universty of Pisa and in the Pisa Unit of INFN.

Spring cycle of Pontecorvo Colloquia 2022. Prof. Andreas Hoeker (CERN): “Smashing Discoveries-the Large Hadron Collider at CERN”

Abstract: In July 2022 particle physicists throughout the world celebrate the 10th anniversary of the discovery of the Higgs boson by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. The seminar introduces in accessible terms the adventure of the largest and most complex physics experiment every realised by humankind. I will recall the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, and discuss what the LHC physicists have learned about this mysterious particle and other high-energy physics phenomena in the ten years following the discovery. At the verge of a new data-taking period, I will also describe the hopes and challenges for the next decade.
