Italian Physicist Claudio Bonanno Wins the Wilson Award 2025

Claudio Bonanno, who earned both his degree and PhD in Physics at the University of Pisa, has won the prestigious Wilson Award 2025, one of the most important international honors in the field of Lattice Field Theory.

The Wilson Award is named after Kenneth G. Wilson, Nobel Prize laureate in Physics and a pioneer of lattice field theories (Lattice Gauge Theory). Established in 2011, the award is presented annually by an international committee to young researchers who have made outstanding contributions to the field within seven years of completing their PhD.

Claudio Bonanno, who graduated in 2017 and obtained his PhD in 2021 at the University of Pisa, is the first Italian researcher to receive this award.

The prize was announced and presented during the international conference Lattice 2025, held from November 2 to 8, 2025, at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai, India.

During the conference, Bonanno presented the research that earned him the award. His work focuses on:

  • the study of the topological properties of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory describing the fundamental strong interactions;
  • the development of innovative algorithms for numerical simulations of lattice field theories;
  • the analysis of the properties of axions, hypothetical particles considered potential components of dark matter.
