On September 29th, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM, the Aula Magna of the New Palazzo “La Sapienza” at the University of Pisa will host a talk entitled “From the Language of Symbols to the Reality of Meaning: The Role of Consciousness”, featuring the renowned scientist and inventor Federico Faggin.
Abstract
What is the relationship between consciousness, symbols, and meaning—especially when a computer seems to “understand” what it says? The proposed hypothesis is that only consciousness can give meaning to symbols, transforming them into elements of experience. Considering consciousness and free will as fundamental principles allows us to shed new light on some of the enigmas of quantum physics and to overcome the crisis of meaning affecting both science and society. This leads to a vision in which science and spirituality are not opposed, but rather converge toward a universe endowed with purpose and intrinsic meaning.
